Course Confirmation Date for the A Semester

In the Learning Management System “UTOL” (UTokyo LMS), even if you have not officially registered for a course on UTAS, you can use the course by adding it to your UTAS syllabus favorites (hereafter referred to as “favorite registration”) or by pressing the “Register for Course” button on UTOL (hereafter referred to as “self-registration”). Of these, for courses that you have not registered for on UTAS, a deadline is set by which students can use the course (hereafter referred to as the “course confirmation date”).

In the A semester of 2026, course confirmation dates will be set uniformly as follows:

Please refer to Supplementary Information 1 for the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Supplementary Information 2 for the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economics, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

We believe that the operational issues encountered in the 2024 Academic Year S Semester, such as students being locked out of courses they plan to register for and subsequently losing access to course materials or assignments before the registration period starts, can be avoided to some extent.

However, there is a possibility that individuals may mistakenly believe that they have completed course registration in UTAS simply because they can access the course. Students are strongly advised to ensure that they complete their course registration through UTAS during the period specified by their affiliated faculty or graduate school. Please note that access to courses in UTOL does not necessarily mean that registration in UTAS has been completed.

If you have any questions concerning UTOL, please contact us through the Support Desk. If you have any questions concerning your registration through UTAS, please contact the academic affairs office of your affiliation.

Supplementary Information

1. Courses for the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences

The course confirmation date for courses offered by the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences in AY2026 is Tuesday, October 20, 2026, for the A Semester/A1 Term. If you can no longer access a course because you forgot to register during the registration period, please make sure to complete your registration during the course correction period. In addition, A2 Term courses will be available for self-registration even after the course registration period ends. Please be especially careful not to forget to complete the course registration procedure.

Please note that the course confirmation dates for courses held on the same day and during the same period by the same professor (combined course, or multiple signature courses) that are offered by the Senior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences are different from the above. Please be sure to register for these courses using UTAS during the relevant course registration period.

2. Courses for the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Economics, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

The course confirmation date varies for certain courses offered by the Faculty of Law.

The course confirmation date for the Faculty of Economics is as follows:

  • A1 Term/A Semester: Sunday, October 18
  • A2 Term: Sunday, December 20

There have been no course confirmations set for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Self-registration will be available even after the course registration period ends. Please be sure not to forget to complete the course registration procedure as needed.

3. Changes in the course access status

In this section, courses in the A1 Term will be used as an example to explain the general changes in course access status over time.

September 1~: Courses become available

From September 1, courses for the A Semester, A1 Term, A2 Term, and W Term will be registered in UTOL, and you will be able to access the courses by “Add Your Favorites” on the syllabus of UTAS (Favorite Registration) or by self-registration in UTOL. Through these registration methods, the courses you have registered in will be displayed in the timetable on UTOL, and a reminder such as “Ensure [Course Registration] on UTAS” will appear to ensure you do not forget to register for courses on UTAS. After the course registration period begins, once you complete course registration on UTAS, this reminder will no longer be displayed.

Please note that information regarding adding courses to course registration or favorite registration on the syllabus will be extracted from UTAS early each morning and reflected in UTOL later that same morning. In short, changes made in UTAS are generally reflected in UTOL the following morning.

After the end of registration period (or course correction period): “Favorite Registration” becomes unavailable

You will no longer be able to access courses using the “Favorite Registration” starting from the morning after the end of the course registration period or the course correction period.

As you may already know, the course registration period and course correction period vary depending on your affiliation or year of study. Consequently, the date when the “Favorite Registration” becomes unavailable differs for each student. However, with a few exceptions, it is expected to be before October 21.

October 21~: “Self-Registration” is unavailable

You will no longer be able to access courses using “Self-Registration” starting from early in the morning of October 21, following the October 20 course confirmation date for the A1 Term. However, you may still be able to access the course if the course instructor changes the settings for the relevant course.

4. Auditing

We sometimes hear from students who, for various reasons, either “do not wish to or cannot officially register for courses through UTAS but still want to audit them”. It is up to the course instructors to decide whether or not to allow such students to audit. Please contact the instructor directly to discuss this matter.

To allow audit students to view UTOL, if there are only a few students auditing, the instructor can register/update the student’s registration method to “Instructor Registration”, or if there are many students auditing, the instructor can change the course settings. If your instructor does not know the specific methods, please refer them to the following page.

5. There are course settings that differ from regular settings

Due to the circumstances of the course instructors, some courses may be accessible only to students who have registered for them through UTAS, even before the course confirmation date. Please contact the instructor directly.

6. Handling of Semester/Term and the Course Confirmation Date

Depending on the course, the dates offered may differ from the standard such as A1 and A2. Please refer to the table below for the handling of the Semester/Term and the course confirmation dates. For the Junior Division of the College of Arts and Sciences, please refer to the table above.
